The world’s tallest bridge has been built

China has opened the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the world’s tallest bridge, in Guizhou Province. This new engineering marvel, approximately 625 meters high, spans the steep and craggy Huajiang Canyon. It revolutionizes transportation in the region by reducing travel time between the two extremes from hours to minutes.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is not only impressive in its height but also holds the title of the longest bridge ever built in mountainous regions. Its main span is approximately 1,400 meters.

This massive structure surpasses the previously held record, the Duge Bridge. The sheer size of the structure is even more impressive when compared to the 956-foot height of the Royal Gorge Bridge in the United States.

The bridge’s construction took approximately four years. The steepness of the canyon and the stabilization of the foundations presented significant challenges for engineers. Officials describe the bridge as both an infrastructure investment that will accelerate economic development and a symbol of engineering achievement.

Guizhou was historically known as one of China’s poorest regions, but over the past 30 years, the region’s transportation infrastructure has been significantly strengthened through extensive government investment in roads, railways, and bridges.

Beyond its transportation benefits, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge was also designed as a major tourism hub. It features a high-speed glass elevator that transports visitors to a cafe approximately 800 meters above sea level. It also features a glass walkway approximately 580 meters above sea level and exciting activities such as bungee jumping.
